A New
Program for Seniors
Orland Fire Protection District in partnership with Orland Township
is presenting a new program titled
Remembering When.
Remembering When
is a Fire and Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults. It was
developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help older
adults live safely at home for as long as possible.
Fact:
At age 65, older adults are twice as likely to be
killed or injured by fires or falls compared to the population at
large.
Fact:
Thirty percent of people age 65 and older are
involved in falls each year, the leading cause of death from
unintentional injury in the home.
Fact:
In the U.S. and Canada, adults age 65 and older
make up about 12 percent of the population–and their numbers are
increasing.
Remembering
When is centered around 16 key
safety messages–eight fire prevention and eight fall
prevention–developed by experts from national and local safety
organizations as well as through focus group testing.
Remembering
When will be presented to
senior groups in the Orland Township area in the near future. We
will offer the program to senior organizations, condo association
meetings, church groups, or any organization that is interested in
learning about fire and fall prevention.
If you would like more information or are interested in setting up a
class for your group or organization, please call the Orland Fire
Protection District at
708-349-0074, ext 210 (Nancy).

NFPA site and download Remembering When newsletters

2007 Employees of Year
Recently, Chief Bryant Krizik
recognized two employees for their contributions to the Fire
District during the past year at the annual awards night. Citing the
criteria used to determine the recipients, he explained that he
looked at their performance during the year, attendance,
participation in tasks outside their job description,
attitude, professionalism, dedication, loyalty and initiative. Both
recipients were surprised by having their families at the ceremony.
William Neumann, Communications Director, was awarded Employee of
the Year while Pam Exline received Firefighter-Paramedic of the Year
recognition.
Bill spent
much of the year working to implement the new dispatch system. He
worked many additional hours during system failures and staffing
shortages. He is very professional in stressful situations and has
taken the initiative to pursue funding sources and develop
procedures that improve the District. Bill, white shirt sitting at
the console at left,
oversees the transition to the new dispatch software.

Pam coordinated several
programs beyond her job description. She served as a mentor /
advocate for new firefighters as well as working on the Union
overtime committee. Awarded an Illinois Fire Chief grant to continue
her education, she is pursuing an associates degree at Moraine
Valley Community College. She was recognized as someone who is
always willing to improve the process in a positive manner. Pam
participated at many of the District's public events.

Fundraiser and Chili Cook-off
Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery of
Orland Park hosted their 12th Annual Fire Chief Chili Cook-Off on
March 26. Rock Bottom brews a special ale for a month-long
fundraising event culminating in the chili cook-off as a national
fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. All funds raised
stay in the in the local area according to MDA District Director
Anna Fratto.
Rock Bottom General Manager Sean Skilnik explained the fundraiser is
one of their biggest limited-time offers and ties into the company's
philanthropic nature. He was able to get memorabilia from the Fire
District to display in the restaurant during the event. Fire hose,
photos of firefighters, emergency lights, a siren and firefighter
t-shirts were hung from walls and displayed on shelves.
The chili cook-off was hotly contested with Dan Silvius of Tinley
Park taking the top spot. Two firefighters and enthusiastic cooks
from OFPD placed second and third in the competition. Nick DeLuca
narrowly beat out Ted Klekamp but there's a sure bet there will be a
rematch next year. Both are looking to take the top spot and get
bragging rights about their chili. |
