Fire District Board Creates Retirees' Health Care Fund

A
t the July Board of Trustees meeting Orland Fire District trustees established a fund for future health care for retirees, earmarking $1 million for the fund.

Maher explained, "Currently, Orland Fire District contributions for retirees' health care are funded annually through the operating budget. The number of district retirees is expected to increase greatly over the next ten years with firefighters who were hired in the 1980s become eligible for retirement."

"This is a proactive approach to offset the need for future funding of retirees' health care costs," Maher said. "The district will annually add to this fund to ensure that future boards will not have to pursue a referendum to help pay the costs of retirees' benefits. We're planning now for what lies ahead with firefighters' retirements," he added.

Deputy Chief Receives $2.00 More An Hour for Added Duties

In other news, the fire trustees voted to modify Deputy Fire Chief Bryant Krizik’s hourly salary to compensate for his additional responsibilities while the district searches for a new fire chief. The amount was later modified to reflect an added $2.00 an hour to Krizik's current salary of $118,914.

“The Orland Fire District has a formula to compensate personnel who take on temporary assignments in positions higher than their own,” said Board President Patrick Maher.
