FIREWORKS SAFETY
Fireworks are best left to the pros! Watch the display on the Fourth
of July at your community park.
On a typical July 4th, there are more fires reported than any other
day. Stay extra vigilant.
Are Sparklers Safe?
Parents who understand that
firecrackers, bottle rockets, and roman candles, etc. can cause
injuries, often let their younger kids play with sparklers because
they think they are safe.
Sparklers, which can reach over
1000°F, cause half of the injuries to children under age fourteen,
and 10 percent of fireworks-related injuries overall.
So even sparklers should be
avoided.

GRILLING TIPS
●
Designate the grilling area a "No Play Zone" keeping kids and pets
well away until grill equipment is completely cool.
●
Before using, position your grill at least 3 feet away from other
objects, including the house and any shrubs or bushes.
●
Only use starter fluid made for barbecue grills when starting a
fire in a charcoal grill. No gasoline!
●
Before using a gas grill, check the connection between the propane
tank and the fuel line to be sure it is working properly and not
leaking.
●
Never use a match to check for leaks. Use soapy water. If you
detect a leak, immediately turn off the gas and don't attempt to
light the grill again until the leak is fixed.
●
Never bring a barbecue grill indoors, or into any unventilated
space. This is both a fire and carbon monoxide poisoning hazard.
●
When ready to barbecue, protect yourself by
wearing a heavy apron and an oven mitt that fits high up over your
forearm.
●
With gas grills, make sure the gas
cylinder is always stored outside and away from your house. Make
sure the valves are turned off when you are not using them. Check
regularly for leaks in the connections using a soap and water mix
that will show bubbles where gas escapes.
●
Barbecue grills should be kept on a level
surface away from the house, garage, landscaping, and most of all,
children.
●
Be sure to soak the coals with water before
you put them in the trash.
●
Always remember that grills remain hot long
after you are through barbecuing.

AVOID THE HEAT
-- Increase your intake of non-alcoholic, non-carbonated,
caffeine-free beverages, like water and juice.
-- Wear clothing that is light in color and loose fitting.
-- Avoid the
outdoors during extreme heat. Stay out of the sun.
-- Stay in an
air-conditioning, if possible. Shopping malls offer relief if your
home is not air-conditioned.
-- Check on the
elderly. They are especially susceptible to heat-related illness.
-- Eliminate
strenuous activity such as running, biking and lawn care work when
it heats up.
-- Eat less foods
that increase metabolic activity/heat, like proteins. Increased
metabolic heat increases water loss. |
